MJ POST 8

During this week of class we discussed many different things. We started off by talking about the movie where they discussed how women in the programming field are considered rare and also the issues they have to overcome to become successful overall in the field. It is important to realize that all the major tech companies and companies that hire programmers are dominated by white males. From this movie we talked about ways that we can get more females into this field and also what causes women to be turned away from programming and computer science.

The following class we had a quest speaker who like me is a ISTA major. She also discussed the same topic in class but also added a ton of stats and other information that paints this issue in a different light. To look at it from the outside is one thing but to hear it from someone who is in the program gives me more information and also a view that I can relate more towards. In my opinion, I would like to see more women join in the field because programming shouldn’t be based off someone’s gender but their ability. It would be wrong to shy away girls from coding because people feel as if they wouldn’t be interested without even giving them the chance to show off their abilities. Hopefully, we can figure out something to get more women into the field to learn but also create more jobs that women can feel interested in and take part in.

  1. I am glad you believe more women should be in STEM fields because it's true that ability should not be based on gender! We need to break stereotypes in the STEM fields and encourage more women and minorities to pursue these occupations because they are quickly on the rise. There are so many jobs available in computer science and related fields, but not enough graduates in those majors. If more diverse people are encouraged to follow those career paths, then maybe we will get more graduates. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
