This week in class we focused on police brutality and black
lives matter as well as focusing on our group project. We first talked about
how BLM started and how the group became popular on twitter. Due to many events
where there seemed to be issues of police brutality on black people in the US,
the group came to a calling. Many black people felt that they were being
targeted by the police and were also getting mistreated. This soon lead to many
people using the hashtag of black lives matter to talk about these issues. BLM
is very active on twitter and there are many users with hundreds of followers
who are online preaching their message. While many people have different interpretations
on the group, it is clear that the group is popular on the online comminutes.
Going along with police brutality and issues with police
officers, twitter users were very vocal when the NYPD used a hashtag trying to
promote the police in the community on twitter. The goal was to encourage users
to post about good times they have had with the NYPD. However, this backfired when
a lot of the users started to point out the flaws and issues the police had
been responsible for recently at the time. Pictures of the police holding guns
towards civilians and the police partaking in violent acts were posted. While
the original idea was to promote the police and their positive light on the
community, it backfired and turned into something where BLM and other groups
could point out the current issues at the time.
