Top of the day to you! During class this week we learned a variety of things that show how the internet and how groups can play a role in something bigger than memes. From the Reddit article, we learned about how people on Reddit are talking about their issues like suicide and how they want somebody to talk to about these issues. Hotlines and other services sound a lot more generic and don’t offer the human responses that are natural of people who have these issues. Why going on Reddit and being straight forward with other people who can relate on a higher level allows for a greater understanding.
Another topic we covered was about the Zapatistas and how they used the internet to gather support. It had to do with NAFTA and how it hurt the people who didn’t live close to the border of Mexico in terms of economics. The group wanted to fight against the bill and created a small army. They realized that they were greatly outnumbered and needed more support. They then used the internet and gathered people to join the cause worldwide, even celebrities. Soon the group gathered enough people. They then changed from being a military army to a group that would take a political stance against what they believe to be right for all of Mexico.
The last thing we did in class was make groups for our group project. This project is worth many points and we are going to do our very best to get an A!
