MJ POST 6

During class this week, we didn’t talk about many things due to our main focus being on our group projects. However, we continued to talk about groups such as black lives matter and the alt right. The collaboration from these groups are seen at around the same level due to a strong social media base and a strong support system. We also looked at police violence and how it played a role on twitter with hash tags from people who were in support of the police claiming they took the right measure and others disagreeing. There was a line seen that spilt these people and made it clear that the issue had an opinion which was divided.

During the rest of the time we focused on our group projects. Since this was a big part of our grade, we made sure to spend a lot of time going about and collaborating with each other. Some people collaborated better than others and some didn’t collaborate at all. From this group project I learned many things but what stood out was that people all care about their grades different. Having had ideas stolen in class to people not putting in minimal effort, it is clear to see that many people just don’t really care. It is funny considering that college isn’t cheap but people are able to do what they want. Having too many people in a group also makes it easier for some people to get over. Working in groups of 3-4 would have been more ideal for this project but time will only tell.

MJ Post 5

This week in class we focused on police brutality and black lives matter as well as focusing on our group project. We first talked about how BLM started and how the group became popular on twitter. Due to many events where there seemed to be issues of police brutality on black people in the US, the group came to a calling. Many black people felt that they were being targeted by the police and were also getting mistreated. This soon lead to many people using the hashtag of black lives matter to talk about these issues. BLM is very active on twitter and there are many users with hundreds of followers who are online preaching their message. While many people have different interpretations on the group, it is clear that the group is popular on the online comminutes.

Going along with police brutality and issues with police officers, twitter users were very vocal when the NYPD used a hashtag trying to promote the police in the community on twitter. The goal was to encourage users to post about good times they have had with the NYPD. However, this backfired when a lot of the users started to point out the flaws and issues the police had been responsible for recently at the time. Pictures of the police holding guns towards civilians and the police partaking in violent acts were posted. While the original idea was to promote the police and their positive light on the community, it backfired and turned into something where BLM and other groups could point out the current issues at the time.
